#st james's

A St James’s institution whose lineage begins with George William Wilton’s shellfish-monger near Haymarket in 1742. Still presenting itself as the London home of oysters, it pairs impeccably sourced seafood with seasonal game, formal service, an oyster bar and the old-fashioned theatre of a carving trolley—continuity expressed through food rather than nostalgia alone.

Founded in 1676, Lock & Co. is the world’s oldest hat shop, still trading behind its green door at 6 St James’s Street. Men’s hats and women’s millinery are fitted and hand-prepared with the accumulated knowledge of a house that treats a hat as both practical object and expression of character.

Britain’s oldest wine and spirits merchant, founded in 1698 and still family-run from No. 3 St James’s Street beneath the Sign of the Coffee Mill. The worn shop, historic weighing scales, cellars and passage into Pickering Place give the experience unusual continuity, backed by serious expertise in fine wine and spirits.

The original, independently family-run London John Lobb, making entirely bespoke shoes, boots and leather goods at 9 St James’s Street. Founded in 1849, the house builds each commission around an individual last and preserves a form of hand shoemaking that is both intensely personal and increasingly rare. Not to be confused with the Hermès-owned John Lobb Paris—also good, but not St James’s bespoke good.

An intimate St James’s cigar merchant opened by Edward Sahakian in 1980 and still shaped by deep family knowledge of the trade. Carefully kept cigars, accessories and highly informed service give it the character of a specialist’s shop rather than a luxury retail exercise.

A St James’s chemist and perfumer founded in 1790, preserving the atmosphere and personal service of a traditional English apothecary. Classic colognes, shaving preparations, soaps and brushes make it a destination for gentleman’s grooming rather than an ordinary pharmacy.
