Founded in 1676, Lock & Co. is the world’s oldest hat shop, still trading behind its green door at 6 St James’s Street. Men’s hats and women’s millinery are fitted and hand-prepared with the accumulated knowledge of a house that treats a hat as both practical object and expression of character.

The original, independently family-run London John Lobb, making entirely bespoke shoes, boots and leather goods at 9 St James’s Street. Founded in 1849, the house builds each commission around an individual last and preserves a form of hand shoemaking that is both intensely personal and increasingly rare. Not to be confused with the Hermès-owned John Lobb Paris—also good, but not St James’s bespoke good.

The more informal counterpart to Anderson & Sheppard’s bespoke house, opened around the corner on Clifford Street. Ready-to-wear trousers, shirts, knitwear, dressing gowns and accessories carry the same eye for colour, cloth and relaxed proportion into clothes that can be taken home immediately.

One of the defining houses of twentieth-century English bespoke tailoring, founded in 1906 and now based on Old Burlington Street. Come for the house cut—the English Drape—with soft shoulders, seams cut on the bias, high armholes and a subtly swollen chest. The result is relaxed but trim silhouette, prioritising movement, comfort and an elegant natural line. They tend to cut their coats a touch long, but it is bespoke, so the proportions can be adjusted to your liking.

An independent Piccadilly Arcade shirtmaker founded in 1910, with its bespoke cutting room still above the small shop. Bespoke and ready-to-wear shirts sit alongside ties, sleepwear and accessories, carrying forward the intimate scale and specialist knowledge of traditional St James’s shirtmaking.

The Jermyn Street home of a British maker refining everyday clothing since 1860. Exceptional cotton T-shirts, polos, knitwear and underwear are treated with quiet precision — luxurious through fabric, proportion and construction rather than display.

A Piccadilly outfitter established in 1839 and devoted to enduring British country clothing. Tweed jackets, covert coats, tattersall shirts, corduroy trousers and knitwear give the shop a wonderfully specific identity that feels inherited rather than manufactured.
