Lorenzo Antinori’s Italian-inspired neighbourhood bar, founded in Hong Kong in 2023 around the idea of cocktail popolari — simple, familiar drinks executed with precision rather than theatre. The room leans into Roman nostalgia, with classics and seasonal variations alongside serious bar food such as smoked olives and mortadella focaccia; walk-in only.

Working family olive-oil mill, tasting boutique and Museo dell’Olio – Sa Mola de su Notariu in Dolianova. Its Olio del Tempio EVOO comes from the family’s Parteolla olive groves and is cold-extracted at the mill on the day of harvest; visited the shop and picked up some very lovely olive oils.

Osteria da Fortunata’s Corso del Rinascimento 17 location near Piazza Navona, part of a Roman osteria tradition the family traces to 1921. The house emphasizes handmade pasta, classic Roman recipes passed through generations, fresh and seasonal ingredients, 100% Italian organic stone-ground flours and extra-virgin olive oil from its Umbrian organic mill. Saved as a separate location to try.

A family-run Roman restaurant at Via del Pantheon 55, founded by Fortunato Baldassarri in 1975 on the site of an older Roman hostelry with a gastronomic history reaching back to the 18th century. Its kitchen balances Roman and broader Italian tradition with house-made bread, desserts and egg pasta, seasonal ingredients, fresh fish from Anzio and a substantial wine cellar; this is the Pantheon restaurant from my May 2024 dinner.

A traditional restaurant at Via delle Fratte di Trastevere 49/50, near Santa Maria in Trastevere. The restaurant describes its cooking as inspired by traditional Roman dishes and Roman-style pizza, while the interior’s commissioned trompe-l’oeil murals evoke scenes of late-18th-century Rome—a distinctive piece of the dining record from my May 2024 stay.

A Roman trattoria at Piazza di San Calisto 7/A in Trastevere, next door to Tonnarello. Its menu is firmly rooted in Roman comfort food—tonnarelli cacio e pepe, carbonara and amatriciana alongside saltimbocca, coda alla vaccinara, abbacchio and its own tiramisu espresso—making it a natural comparison stop with the neighbouring favourite.

A large Mayfair dining destination bringing distinct Italian and Asian restaurants together with a late-night lounge bar. Polished and theatrical, with broad menus, conspicuous displays of fresh produce and an atmosphere built as much around the room as the cooking.

A compact pasta bar beside Borough Market from the team behind Trullo, centred on handmade pasta and confidently simple sauces. The appeal is the immediacy: a short, changing menu, an open kitchen and serious cooking in an informal room.
