Tomos Parry’s first-floor Shoreditch restaurant channels the wood-fired cooking of Spain’s Basque coast through British produce and a distinctly convivial room. The whole turbot cooked in a cage over flame is the signature, but the deeper appeal is a menu of smoky breads, grilled seafood, vegetables and meat designed to arrive generously for the table.

The Soho outpost of Noble Rot occupies 2 Greek Street, the storied former home of the Gay Hussar. It combines the curiosity and authority of the Noble Rot wine magazine with compact French-British cooking, an unusually deep list and opportunities to drink mature or hard-to-find bottles without the stiffness of a conventional fine-wine dining room.

A St James’s institution whose lineage begins with George William Wilton’s shellfish-monger near Haymarket in 1742. Still presenting itself as the London home of oysters, it pairs impeccably sourced seafood with seasonal game, formal service, an oyster bar and the old-fashioned theatre of a carving trolley—continuity expressed through food rather than nostalgia alone.

St. John’s Spitalfields dining room applies Fergus Henderson’s nose-to-tail philosophy in a relaxed, flexible format originally conceived around bread, wine and the market. Daily-changing menus move from confidently simple vegetables and cold dishes to offal, lesser-used cuts and traditional British puddings, with cooking that relies on season, proportion and flavour rather than decoration.

A Grade II-listed village inn near the waterfront in Hamble, full of oak beams, exposed brick, timber and an open fireplace. Seasonal cooking with local provenance, real ales and a river-facing terrace give it the substance and atmosphere expected of a proper coastal English pub.

A relaxed steakhouse, bar and small hotel opposite Swanwick Marina near the banks of the Hamble. The menu is built around generously portioned steaks and grill cooking, making it an unfussy waterside stop rather than a formal destination steakhouse.

A longstanding waterside pub on Shore Road, occupying one of Warsash’s characteristic positions overlooking the mouth of the River Hamble. Traditional pub food and drinks are secondary to the easy pleasure of watching ferries, yachts and river traffic from the shoreline.

An independent coffee shop inside Universal Marina, serving its own onsite-roasted coffee alongside cakes, pastries and straightforward deli-style food. Indoor and covered outdoor seating make it an easy stopping point on the quieter, tree-lined stretch of the River Hamble. Come for the rustic charm, views of the harbour on the river Hamble, good coffee and a toastie.

A historic riverside pub tucked down the wooded bank at Old Bursledon, with decks and a pontoon looking directly across the Hamble toward Swanwick Marina. Its weathered maritime character, waterside access and seasonal pub cooking make it feel inseparable from the sailing life of the river. Very charming view of the riverside, built into the bluffs of the North Bank of the Hamble—lit by string lights in the evenings. Go for the slow-cooked beef-and-Guinness pie, then finish with the sticky toffee pudding.

A lively modern British restaurant on Haymarket built around creative use of underused ingredients and a low-waste, whole-product approach. Bold signatures such as mushroom parfait and cod’s head sit naturally within an energetic room that makes the boundary between serious cooking and casual dining.

The historic Piccadilly department store, best known for its food halls, teas, preserves, confectionery and unmistakable hampers. More than a shop, it condenses a particularly British world of provisions, ceremony and gifting beneath one roof.

An eighteenth-century country inn in the quiet Hampshire village of Mapledurwell, run by Sandra and Philip Costello since 2003. The owner is friendly and unassuming, but incredibly knowledgeable and well travelled. The menu changes weekly, transforming fresh ingredients into excellent examples of British fare, accompanied by local real ales and a serious wine list. They do like their ale warm—if you’re into that.
